Who We Are
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory continuously monitors the Soufriere Hills Volcano to provide timely advice to the authorities in order to reduce the impact of volcanic activity through Research & Monitoring, and Education & Outreach.
OUR EVOLUTION
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) was established shortly after the initial phreatic eruption of the Soufrière Hills Volcano on July 18, 1995. Initially named the Soufrière Hills Volcano Observatory, it was staffed by scientists from the UWI Seismic Research Unit (SRU) and the Guadeloupe Volcano Observatory (IPGP), with support from the USGS Volcano Disaster Assistance Program and the British Geological Survey (BGS). Before the eruption, monitoring was conducted by the SRU. In August 1999, the MVO became a statutory authority of the Government of Montserrat, with a full-time Director appointed. From 1998 to March 2008, the BGS managed the Observatory, and since April 2008, it has been managed by the UWI Seismic Research Centre (Trinidad and Tobago). Local personnel have been the primary workforce for monitoring operations throughout the eruption.
