Patrick Chege Kariuki
Dr. Patrick Chege Kariuki

Geoscientist, Geothermal Training & Research Institute, Kenya

A geoscientist with Kenya’s Geothermal Training and Research Institute (GeTRI), Dr. Kariuki brings decades of experience in geosciences, GIS, and remote sensing. His academic journey spans Kenya, Japan, and the Netherlands, and his work includes over 40 peer-reviewed publications and leadership in multidisciplinary energy projects across Africa.

At SHV30, he’ll share Kenya’s geothermal journey and reflect on how innovation in volcanic landscapes can guide Montserrat’s sustainable energy future.

Franklyn V. Michael
Mr. Franklyn V. Michael

Former EOC Director, Montserrat

Mr. Michael led Montserrat’s Emergency Operations Centre in the early years of the volcanic crisis and played a central role in non-military disaster response from 1995 to 1999. With over 40 years of service across the Caribbean, he has contributed to leadership, planning, and resilience efforts through organizations like CARICAD, CDEMA, UNDP, and more.

He brings powerful insight into the institutional responses that shaped the early days of living with an erupting volcano — and reflections that remain deeply relevant today.

Former EOC Director, Montserrat

Dr. Erouscilla P. Joseph
Dr. Erouscilla P. Joseph

Director, UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC), Trinidad & Tobago

With more than two decades of experience in volcanology and public outreach, Dr. Joseph has led the UWI SRC through pivotal moments in Caribbean hazard response — including the 2021 eruption of La Soufrière in St. Vincent.

Her research spans volcanic gas emissions, geothermal systems, and crisis communication. As Director, she has advanced the SRC’s regional impact through innovation, international collaboration, and public education.

At SHV30, Dr. Joseph will reflect on lessons learned from managing volcanic hazards across the region — and the future of monitoring and resilience in active landscapes like Montserrat.

RTM
Honourable Reuben T. Meade

Premier, Montserrat

An economist by training, Premier Meade has been a key figure in Montserrat’s governance for over three decades. He first served as Chief Minister at just 37 years old, guiding the country through the earliest and most uncertain days of the Soufrière Hills Volcano crisis in 1995. In 2011, he became Montserrat’s first Premier under the new Constitution, and in 2024, he was elected to serve once again as Premier — as the island marks 30 years since the onset of volcanic activity.

At SHV30, Premier Meade will reflect on leading Montserrat during the start of the volcanic crisis and share his vision for where the island is headed, three decades later.
