Arvid provides computer systems design, development, support and consultation on new and existing data collection, processing, analysis and reporting systems, including intranet and internet Web sites and Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS).

    DR. GRAHAM RYAN

    Research Fellow - Volcanology / Director (Montserrat Volcano Observatory)

    Dr. Ryan, the first Montserrat national to head the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), has been associated with MVO since interning there in 1996. With a PhD in Volcanology and a background in Physics, he has held various roles in volcano and geothermal physics globally. His recent work involved monitoring volcanic deformation across The Lesser Antilles and overseeing geothermal projects. Experienced in leading diverse teams in challenging environments, Dr. Ryan emphasizes practical research methods and brings extensive experience in disaster risk management to his role, positioning him well for guiding MVO’s future endeavors.

      Fidel Costa

      Fidel is an igneous petrologist and geochemist specialising in volcanic processes. He has been involved in developing new geochronological methods to determine the rates of volcanic and magmatic processes occurring on human time scales.

        Education and Outreach Intern

        Roneike Duncan is an intern attached to Education and Outreach. She assists in education and outreach program delivery while acquiring knowledge and gaining valuable experience.

        Dr. Jose M. Marrero

        Volcanologist

        Dr. Marrero specializes in risk assessment for volcanic areas and has responded to emergencies in Spain and Ecuador. He developed hazard maps for La Palma and contributed to early warning systems for El Hierro. He also worked on vulnerability assessments in Portoviejo and served as a mayor’s advisor in Quito. Dr. Marrero joined MVO in 2022.

        Thiffanie Williams

        Education and Outreach Coordinator

        Thiffanie Williams is the Education and Outreach Coordinator. She uses her background in environmental science, communication extension and education to create and increase public awareness of the MVO and the volcano.

        Prof Mike Burton

        Professor of Volcanology

        Professor Mike Burton studies volcanic processes using a combination of observations, experiments and modelling in order to improve our ability to understand and forecast eruptions and the impact of volcanic activity on volatile cycles and regional and global climate. A major element of this work is done collaboratively with volcano observatories.

          Dr Eliza Calder’s research is in the area of volcanology, especially the physical nature of volcanic processes. Her research encompasses the study of the driving forces and controlling parameters of volcanic eruptive activity from the subsurface to the external environment, the emplacement mechanisms of volcanic flows, and the analysis of volcanic hazards.

              Financial & Administrative Officer

              Gunjan Jeswani was born and raised in India and has a degree in Commerce and a  Post Graduate degree in Taxation in Law from Pune University. She was appointed as Financial & Administrative Officer in 2007.

              Sharon Charles

              Clerical Officer

              Sharon Charles was born and raised in Dominica and migrated to Montserrat in 1988.  She is the Clerical Officer, having worked at the MVO since October 1998.

              Barry (Pyiko) Williams

              Senior Instrumentation Engineer

              Barry (Pyiko) Williams is MVO’s Senior Instrumentation Engineer, he first joined the MVO in 1998 under contract for the St Vincent Government Support Program.

              Racquel Syers

              Scientific Technician

              Racquel ‘Tappy’ Syers has been with the MVO since 1998.  He is responsible for the technical support of the ground deformation monitoring programme which includes taking measurements using EDM and GPS techniques. 

              Marlon Fergus

              Electronics Technician

              Marlon Fergus joined MVO in October 2006 as an electronics technician using his background in electronics.

              Venus Bass

              Seismic & Environmental Technician

              Venus Bass is a Montserratian who has been working at the MVO since April of 1996. She is now the Seismic and Environmental Technician.

              Dr. Adam Stinton

              Volcanologist

              Dr. Adam Stinton, a Volcanologist at MVO, monitors Soufriere Hills volcano’s activity, focusing on changes in the lava dome and fumaroles. His research explores the geomorphic impacts of volcanic activity, including pyroclastic flows and lahars, while ongoing monitoring projects include aerial photogrammetry and fumarole temperature logging.

              Dr. Karen Pascal

              Volcanologist

              Dr. Pascal is a volcanologist specialized in volcano-deformation monitoring and modelling, and is the lead of the MVO volcano-geodesy program. Additionally, she collaborates in interdisciplinary projects, working alongside the community and volcanic risk management stakeholders, to reduce the impacts of volcanic risks.

              Dr. Thomas Christopher

              Volcanologist

              Dr. Thomas Christopher, a Degassing Volcanologist/Petrologist at MVO, studies volcanic degassing, petrology, and geochemistry. He earned a geology degree at UWI Mona, worked at MVO, and completed a PhD at Cambridge, focusing on the 2001 Mt Etna eruption’s lava types.

              Roderick Stewart

              Seismologist

              Roderick Stewart, a Scottish geophysicist, specializes in volcano-seismology. With experience in diverse seismological areas, including monitoring nuclear explosions and geothermal energy extraction, he has worked at observatories in Papua New Guinea and Montserrat. Currently with the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation, he contributes to global seismic station construction and uses data to monitor volcanic activity, also engaging in discussions for a global volcano-warning system with the civil aviation industry.
