New Police Recruits Receive Introduction to the Soufrière Hills Volcano from the MVO
Getting to know Montserrat means getting to know our volcano. Understanding the Soufrière Hills Volcano and its hazards is key to living and working safely on island.
As part of their training programme, a group of new police recruits recently participated in an introductory session on the Soufrière Hills Volcano delivered by Dr Liz Gaunt of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO).
The session provided recruits with an overview of the volcano, its eruption history, the hazards associated with volcanic activity, and the role of the MVO in monitoring the volcano and providing scientific advice to the Government of Montserrat. Recruits also learned about the importance of hazard awareness and preparedness in supporting community safety.
Police officers are among the island’s first responders and may be called upon to assist during emergencies. Having a sound understanding of volcanic hazards helps ensure they are better prepared to respond effectively and support emergency management efforts when needed.
The MVO recognizes the importance of sharing volcanic hazard information with individuals who are new to Montserrat, particularly those serving in roles that involve public safety and emergency response. Building this knowledge helps strengthen awareness, preparedness, and resilience across the island.
