
MVO Scientists Support Turtle Nest Monitoring Effort
Scientists from the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) recently assisted a local conservation group by carrying out temperature measurements at a turtle nesting beach on island.
Following a request from the conservation group, Dr Liz Guant and Dr Adam Stinton conducted a series of temperature profile measurements across the beach to help better understand the environmental conditions experienced by turtle nests.
Using a thermocouple, temperatures were measured within the sand to depths of up to 90 centimetres below the surface adjacent to several nests. The measurements provide valuable information about how temperature varies with depth and location across the nesting area.
The data collected will support ongoing conservation efforts by helping the group better understand the environmental conditions affecting the nests. Temperature is an important factor in sea turtle nest development, influencing incubation conditions and hatchling success.
While the Montserrat Volcano Observatory is best known for monitoring the Soufrière Hills Volcano, its scientific expertise and field equipment can also contribute to a wide range of environmental research projects across Montserrat.
This collaborative effort highlights the value of partnerships between scientific and conservation organisations and demonstrates how scientific tools and expertise can be applied to support the understanding and protection of the island’s natural environment.
