Dalaiah’s MVO Internship BLOG – Week 1

Day 1- My Introduction to the MVO

Nervous. That is how I felt as I entered the MVO on the first day of my very first internship, but then, I was met with a kind smile by Ms. Vera Duberry who then gave me a brief tour of the office and introduced me to the staff. After meeting everyone I began my first session in the ops room with Ms. Venus Bass, the seismic technician. She was very approachable and she shared with me the role she played in the MVO. She also introduced me to seismic monitoring and she taught me how to process seismic records and how to differentiate the different seismic patterns in an earthquake.

Day 2- Administration Day

My second day at the MVO was much less nerve racking. I began my day with the clerical officer, Ms. Sharon Charles who taught me how to greet visitors and how to process sales. I liked that there was a link to accounting which I am interested in but it taught me something about myself. Administrative work will not be my first choice, however it made me understand the importance of administrative work.

Day 3- Helicopter Day 

I was really looking forward to that day, considering it would be my first time on a helicopter. The days adventures included:

Flying to the south of rendezvous beach with pyiko

Measuring the sulfur dioxide flux using ultra-violet rays with TC 

Setting up the EDM equipment and collecting field data with Tappy

This was by- far my favorite day of the week so far because of the various adventures.

Day 4- Hazard and Risk Day

I was not sure what I should’ve expected on that day but it was surprisingly educational. I learned that the date and time of a volcano eruption can affect where ash plumes travel over other areas. Dr. Gaunt also taught me how to use special maps and potential impacts.

Day 5- Understanding Earthquakes 

The first week ended on a calm but informative note. I spent the day with Stephen Hernandez the seismologist. He showed me the importance of the primary and secondary waves of an earthquake and he also showed me they moved using a slynkie which was very interesting and fun. He also gave us a representation of how the raspberry shake uses its sensitivity to record seismic data.
