MVO Director Provides Message for UK Diaspora Led Volcano Awareness Month Activities
The inaugural Volcano Awareness Month is being marked through a series of activities in the United Kingdom led by members of the Montserrat diaspora, bringing together people to celebrate Montserrat’s culture, history, and shared identity.
As part of the opening ceremony, a message from Dr Graham Ryan, Director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), was read on his behalf.
In his statement, Dr Ryan reflected on the profound impact that the Soufrière Hills Volcano has had on Montserrat and its people since the eruption began in 1995. He acknowledged the lives lost, the communities displaced, and the lasting changes that continue to shape life on the island and within Montserratian communities around the world.
The statement also highlighted the importance of ongoing scientific monitoring and public understanding of the volcano. While volcanic activity remains low, MVO continues to monitor signs of unrest beneath the island and provide advice to authorities to help reduce the impacts of future volcanic activity. The Observatory’s work includes seismic, gas, and ground deformation monitoring, alongside research and public outreach activities.
Looking to the future, Dr Ryan noted that the same volcanic processes that have shaped Montserrat’s landscape may also present opportunities through initiatives such as geothermal energy development and ongoing scientific research.
The message concluded with an invitation for Montserratians, both at home and overseas, to reflect on the island’s journey, honour its resilience, and remain connected to its story.
