Dr. Peter Baxter awarded OBE in King’s Birthday Honours for services to volcanic health research
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) extends its warm congratulations to Dr Peter Baxter, who has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in The King’s Birthday Honours.
Dr Baxter is internationally recognised for his pioneering work on the health impacts of volcanic eruptions. During the early years of the Soufrière Hills Volcano crisis, he led critical research into the effects of volcanic ash exposure on human health, providing evidence-based insights at a time when Montserrat was facing unprecedented volcanic activity.
His work contributed significantly to global understanding of volcanic health hazards and helped shape public health responses and guidance for communities living in the shadow of active volcanoes. His research continues to inform volcanology, occupational health, and disaster risk reduction practice worldwide.
The MVO acknowledges Dr Baxter’s longstanding commitment to applied science in service of vulnerable populations and his contribution to improving resilience in volcanic environments.
Dr Baxter’s recognition in The King’s Birthday Honours reflects not only his scientific excellence but also the lasting importance of collaborative research in understanding and mitigating volcanic health risks.
