MVO Supports Master’s Research on Montserrat’s Post-Eruption Transformation
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is pleased to congratulate Cyril Roumiguie on the successful defense of his master’s thesis, which was based on fieldwork conducted in Montserrat.
Roumiguie’s research examined the reconfiguration of territory in the context of a prolonged volcanic crisis, using Montserrat as a case study. His work analyzed and mapped the island’s evolution since 1995, the year the Soufrière Hills Volcano began erupting, and explored the social, spatial, and territorial transformations that have shaped the island over the past three decades.
Through a diachronic approach, the study traced changes over time, providing valuable insights into how volcanic activity has influenced settlement patterns, land use, infrastructure, and community life. The research contributes to a growing body of knowledge on the long-term impacts of volcanic crises and the ways in which communities adapt to changing environments.
During his fieldwork in Montserrat, Roumiguie received support from Dr. Karen Pascal and members of the MVO team. Reflecting on his experience, he expressed his gratitude for the assistance and guidance provided throughout the research process.
The MVO regularly supports students, researchers, and academic institutions from around the world who conduct studies related to volcanology, disaster risk reduction, environmental change, and the social impacts of volcanic activity. By facilitating access to scientific information, field sites, and local expertise, the Observatory helps advance understanding of volcanic systems and their interaction with communities.
