MVO Recognises Dave Williams and Venus Bass for 30 Years of Service
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is proud to recognise two dedicated members of its team, Dave Williams and Venus Bass, as they each celebrate an extraordinary milestone of 30 years of service.
Some things at MVO have changed a lot over the last 30 years. The volcano. The technology. The buildings. The faces. Yet through it all, Dave and Venus have remained constant, contributing to the growth and success of the Observatory throughout some of the most significant periods in Montserrat’s modern history.
Having joined MVO during its formative years, both Dave and Venus have witnessed the evolution of the Observatory alongside the unfolding story of the Soufrière Hills Volcano. Over the past three decades, they have experienced the challenges, uncertainties, and defining moments of the eruption years, while also observing the transformation of both the Observatory and the island itself.
Their careers have spanned periods of intense volcanic activity, major scientific campaigns, international collaboration, and ongoing monitoring efforts. Throughout these changes, they have provided invaluable support, institutional knowledge, and a steadfast commitment to the work of MVO.
The success of any organisation depends not only on its mission but also on the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that mission is achieved. Dave and Venus have exemplified dedication, professionalism, and reliability, helping to create an environment where staff, scientists, researchers, students, and visitors can carry out their work effectively.
Over the years, countless colleagues have benefited from their experience, support, and willingness to contribute wherever needed. Their commitment has helped shape the culture of the Observatory and has played an important role in sustaining MVO’s work through decades of change.
Thirty years of service is a remarkable achievement and a testament to resilience, loyalty, and a deep commitment to public service. As MVO reflects on its journey over the past three decades, it is fitting to acknowledge the individuals whose contributions have helped build and strengthen the institution.
