Dr. Graham Ryan Undertakes Oxford Fellowship Focused on Montserrat Geothermal Research

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory is pleased to share that Director Dr. Graham Ryan is currently serving as a Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Martin School for a one-month period, where he is collaborating with the ReSET (Rethinking Natural Resources) project team on ongoing geothermal research related to Montserrat.

During the fellowship, Dr. Ryan is working to integrate data collected throughout the ReSET project with pre-existing datasets and previous research in order to refine and revise the conceptual model of Montserrat’s geothermal system(s). This work contributes to a broader scientific effort to better understand the island’s geothermal potential and the processes operating beneath the Soufrière Hills volcanic system.

The ReSET project is an interdisciplinary initiative led by researchers at the University of Oxford and brings together expertise from Earth Sciences, Economics, Law, History, Chemistry, and the social sciences. The programme explores how volcanic islands such as Montserrat may sustainably harness geothermal energy while examining the environmental, social, and governance considerations associated with geothermal development and the possible recovery of critical minerals from geothermal fluids.

As part of his fellowship activities, Dr. Ryan recently delivered a seminar during a geothermal workshop hosted by the Department of Earth Sciences at Oxford University. The presentation highlighted Montserrat’s unique volcanic and geothermal environment and shared insights gained through ongoing monitoring and research at the MVO.

The collaboration reflects the continued importance of international scientific partnerships in advancing research on Montserrat’s volcanic systems and supporting informed discussions on geothermal energy development within the region.
