MVO Issues Reminder to Observe Signage at St. George’s Hill

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is reminding members of the public to observe warning signage posted in the St. George’s Hill area and to avoid going beyond marked boundaries.

The sign, which indicates a restricted point, serves as an important notice to prevent access to areas where sensitive monitoring equipment is located. While the surrounding area may be accessible, the zone beyond the sign is restricted due to the presence of scientific instruments used in volcanic monitoring.

These instruments form part of MVO’s island-wide monitoring network and are strategically placed to collect accurate data on volcanic activity. Interference with or disturbance of this equipment can compromise data quality and affect the Observatory’s ability to provide timely and reliable information to the public.

MVO noted that the signage was installed by relevant authorities as a precautionary safety measure prior to the area becoming more frequented. The equipment itself is located some distance beyond the main areas typically used by visitors.

The Observatory is also exploring additional measures to further secure these sites. In the interim, the public is urged to respect all posted signage and refrain from entering restricted zones or tampering with any equipment.

MVO thanks the public for its understanding and continued support in protecting critical monitoring systems.
