MVO Bids Farewell to Roderick (Rod) Stewart, Honouring His Service and Impact

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) extends its sincere thanks and best wishes to Roderick (Rod) Stewart as he concludes his service with the Observatory.

Over many years, Rod has been an integral part of the MVO team, contributing significantly to advancing our understanding of the Soufrière Hills Volcano and strengthening the Observatory’s monitoring and response systems. A skilled seismologist and respected leader, he served not only as a key scientific officer but also as Director, guiding MVO through important phases of research, operational development, and capacity building.

Rod’s impact reached far beyond Montserrat. Through his work with the Seismic Research Centre, he supported volcanic monitoring and scientific collaboration across the Eastern Caribbean. Notably, he played an important role in St. Vincent during the La Soufrière eruption, contributing to monitoring efforts and supporting timely evacuation decisions as activity escalated into explosive eruptions. His work was instrumental in helping to safeguard lives and communities.

A strong advocate for people development, Rod was deeply committed to creating opportunities for local interns and nurturing the next generation of scientists and technical professionals. He also placed great value on outreach, actively supporting efforts to engage the public and improve understanding of volcanic hazards and risk.

Rod’s dedication, leadership, and willingness to share knowledge have left a lasting legacy at MVO and across the region.

The MVO team expresses its heartfelt appreciation for his years of service and wishes him every success in his next chapter.
