Simon’s Rock Field Course Becomes Annual Collaboration with MVO

Since 2024, the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) has welcomed students from Simon’s Rock as part of their Montserrat Field Course. This collaboration has quickly become a highlight of the students’ visit to the island, combining lectures with hands-on field experiences that bring volcanology and geology to life.

This year, students learned about MVO’s work and monitoring operations, explored Plymouth to see the impacts of volcanic eruptions, and studied key topics including volcano seismology, petrology, volcanic ground deformation, and gas monitoring. They also enjoyed a cultural perspective through the island’s murals, connecting science with Montserrat’s human and artistic response to its volcanic landscape.

These experiences allow students to connect theory with real-world observation, deepening their understanding of volcanic processes and Montserrat’s unique environment. The collaboration has now become an annual feature of the Simon’s Rock Field Course, inspiring curiosity, fostering practical learning, and strengthening appreciation for the island’s dynamic natural environment.

MVO looks forward to welcoming Simon’s Rock students back in future years, continuing this tradition of experiential learning and engagement with Montserrat’s extraordinary volcanic landscape.
