MVO Supports Access Warden Training with Volcanic Hazards Presentation
March 31, 2026 Thiffanie Williams
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory recently supported an Access Warden Training Session hosted by the Disaster Management Coordination Agency, reinforcing efforts to strengthen volcanic risk awareness and public safety on island.
As part of the training, Dr. Liz Gaunt, Hazard and Risk Specialist at MVO, delivered a presentation on volcanic hazards associated with the Soufrière Hills Volcano. The session provided participants with a clear understanding of key hazards, including pyroclastic flows, ashfall, and lahars, and examined how these phenomena can affect communities, infrastructure, and access to restricted areas.
Access Wardens play a critical role in managing entry into Zone V—the Exclusion Zone. Their responsibilities include regulating access to ensure that only authorised individuals enter these areas under controlled conditions, thereby reducing exposure to potentially life-threatening hazards.
By equipping Access Wardens with up-to-date scientific knowledge, the training supports more informed decision-making and strengthens frontline response efforts.
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory commends the Access Wardens for their dedication and continued commitment to safeguarding the public and supporting effective hazard management across Montserrat.
