MVO Staff Among Honourees at National Awards Ceremony
March 31, 2026 Thiffanie Williams
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) proudly recognises three of its team members—Dave Williams, Raquel “Tappy” Syers, and Dr. Thomas “TC” Christopher—who have been awarded the Humanitarian & Emergency Services (HES) Medal under the Montserrat National Honours and Awards 2026.
The awards were conferred by the Government of Montserrat in recognition of the recipients’ distinguished service as members of the Royal Montserrat Defence Force (RMDF) during the height of the Soufrière Hills volcanic eruptions between 1995 and 1997. In total, eighty-eight (88) former RMDF members were honoured for their exceptional contributions during this critical period in the island’s history.
During the volcanic crisis, RMDF personnel played a vital and wide-ranging role in the national response. Their responsibilities included assisting with reconnaissance missions in hazardous areas such as Chances Peak, managing checkpoints within restricted zones, supporting the evacuation of at-risk communities, and contributing to the establishment and operations of the island’s first national Search and Rescue Team. Their efforts were instrumental in safeguarding lives and maintaining order during a time of significant uncertainty and disruption.
The Humanitarian & Emergency Services Medal is awarded to individuals whose service during a national emergency is deemed exceptional and worthy of national recognition. Notably, 2026 marks the first year that this category has been included in the Montserrat National Honours and Awards, making this recognition especially significant.
The MVO commends Dave Williams, Raquel Syers, and Dr. Thomas Christopher for their courage, dedication, and enduring commitment to the people of Montserrat. Their continued service at the Observatory reflects the same sense of duty and professionalism demonstrated during the volcanic crisis.
Their recognition serves as a reminder of the critical role played by those who supported Montserrat through one of its most challenging periods, and of the lasting impact of their service on the island’s resilience and recovery.
