MVO Welcomes Stephen Hernandez, Volcano and Tectonic Seismologist
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is pleased to welcome Stephen Hernandez, a volcano and tectonic seismologist from the United States, to our scientific team.
Stephen’s work focuses on developing and applying novel techniques to real-time seismic data as a means of improving volcano monitoring capabilities. Seismic monitoring is a cornerstone of volcanic hazard assessment, providing critical insights into subsurface processes such as magma movement, rock fracturing, and changes within hydrothermal systems. By advancing how seismic data are analysed and interpreted, Stephen aims to strengthen early detection and improve the accuracy of monitoring systems.
Prior to joining MVO, Stephen spent over a decade in Ecuador studying and responding to multiple eruptions from various volcanoes. His work involved both scientific research and operational response, providing him with valuable hands-on experience in active volcanic environments. These practical experiences now inform his approach to volcano monitoring and risk reduction in Montserrat.
Stephen’s most recent research centres on retroactively applying modern seismological methods — including interferometry and double-difference techniques — to past eruptive episodes. By revisiting historical datasets with advanced analytical tools, he seeks to refine our understanding of volcanic processes and uncover patterns that may have previously gone undetected. This work not only broadens scientific understanding of past eruptions but also contributes to improving preparedness for future volcanic activity.
His expertise in both real-time monitoring and retrospective seismic analysis will further strengthen MVO’s capacity to monitor the Soufrière Hills Volcano and support evidence-based hazard assessment.
MVO is delighted to have Stephen join our dedicated team as we continue our mission of scientific excellence, public safety, and community resilience.
We warmly welcome him to Montserrat.
