MVO Welcomes New Volcanologist: Dr. Liz Gaunt (Hazard and Risk)
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Liz Gaunt as our newest Volcanologist specializing in Hazard and Risk.
Dr. Gaunt brings with her a strong academic and professional background in volcanology and geophysics. She holds a PhD in Geophysics from University College London, UK, and has nearly a decade of experience working in volcano monitoring and volcanic hazard assessment. After graduating from UCL she went to work as part of the volcanology team in the daily monitoring of Ecuadorian volcanoes at the Instituto Geofisico of the Escuela Politecnica Nacional, the national volcano and seismic monitoring organization in Ecuador. As part of this role, she participated in the response to multiple volcanic eruptions at numerous different volcanoes in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. In addition, she was involved with various different types of volcanic hazard modelling and in the development of new hazard maps for Ecuadorian volcanoes, including the socialization and communication of these maps to wider stakeholders and the community.
Her diverse avenues of research include; investigating gas movement processes in magma through high temperature, high-pressure laboratory experiments of fluid movement; analysing the physical properties of volcanic ash and how they link to geophysical monitoring data; and the development of new monitoring equipment to track volcanic ash fall and the automated collection of time constrained samples of volcanic ash.
We are pleased to have Dr Gaunt join our dedicated team. Her expertise and passion for volcanology will be a valuable asset to the MVO and our community.
