Montserrat Volcano Observatory Welcomes Nearly 3,000 Visitors in 2025
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) welcomed 2,970 visitors in 2025, marking a strong year of public engagement and continued interest in volcanic science, monitoring, and education.
The figure reflects a comprehensive approach to visitor tracking introduced in late 2023. Prior to this change, MVO visitor records primarily captured individuals who paid to view the Observatory’s documentary. Since the last quarter of 2023, the Observatory has expanded its tracking to include all visitors who tour the facility, including those engaging with free exhibits, posters, and artifacts.
Using this updated system, 2024 recorded approximately 2,500 visitors, making it the first full year of comprehensive visitor data. The increase to 2,970 visitors in 2025 highlights steady growth in public interest and outreach.
Visitors to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory include residents, students, and visitors to the island, many of whom take part in self-guided tours that offer insight into the Soufrière Hills Volcano, monitoring technologies, and Montserrat’s volcanic history.
The Observatory continues to play a critical role not only in volcanic monitoring and hazard assessment, but also in public education and community engagement. Visitor interactions provide opportunities to strengthen understanding of volcanic risk, resilience, and living safely in a volcanic environment.
As 2026 begins, MVO remains committed to enhancing the visitor experience, expanding educational outreach, and maintaining transparent communication with the public.
