Intern Visits MVO to Support Development of Saba’s Volcano Preparedness Plan
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) recently welcomed Jade Every, an intern with the Department of Public Order and Safety in Saba, who visited the organisation as part of her ongoing work to develop a volcano preparedness and response plan for the island of Saba.
Every’s visit forms an important step in strengthening Saba’s readiness for natural hazards, despite there being no current threat of volcanic activity on the island. Her goal is to ensure that, in the unlikely event of increased activity, Saba has a clear, informed, and practical response framework in place.
During her time at the MVO, Every met with scientists and technical staff to learn how Montserrat has managed the Soufrière Hills Volcano for nearly 30 years. Through discussions, demonstrations, and site observations, she gained insight into key areas such as:
- How the MVO monitors volcanic activity using seismic, gas, ground deformation, and visual techniques.
- How scientific information is translated into emergency planning and decision-making.
- The role of clear and consistent risk communication during periods of heightened activity.
- The broader experience of how a small island community adapts to living with an active volcano
The MVO continues to support knowledge sharing across the region and was pleased to provide guidance that will contribute to Saba’s long-term preparedness planning.
