MVO Staff Receive Training on iNaturalist App to Support Environmental Monitoring
Staff of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) participated in a practical training session led by Mr. Chris Sealy from the Montserrat National Trust (MNT) on the use of the iNaturalist app for cataloguing flora and fauna across the island.
The session, held at the MVO, introduced staff to the iNaturalist appused to identify and record species using mobile devices. This initiative forms part of MVO’s ongoing commitment to understanding Montserrat’s changing environment and supporting local conservation efforts.

Mr. Sealy guided participants through the process of capturing and submitting observations via the app, emphasizing the importance of citizen science in building a comprehensive biodiversity record for Montserrat.
While Zone V remains a restricted area, MVO personnel who have authorized access for monitoring purposes will now also contribute to documenting observations of flora and fauna within the zone. These records help capture how ecosystems recover and adapt over time in the volcanic landscape.
The collaboration between MVO and the Montserrat National Trust underscores a shared goal: to enhance knowledge of Montserrat’s natural heritage and ensure that both its volcanic and biological environments are carefully studied and preserved for future generations.
