MVO Welcomes Young Learners from Summer Programmes

This summer, the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) opened its doors to several youth groups, giving children an opportunity to explore and learn more about Montserrat’s Soufrière Hills Volcano.

Participants from the Escape Summer Programme, the Calabash Bus Tour, and the Montserrat Public Library Summer School visited the Observatory during July and August. Each visit included guided tours of the Visitor Centre and Operations Room designed to help children understand volcano science in an engaging and age-appropriate way.

The children were especially excited to see real volcanic rocks and monitoring equipment, while learning about how scientists keep track of the Soufrière Hills Volcano. Many were also eager to ask questions about how volcanoes work and what it’s like to be a volcanologist.

Education and outreach remain central to the MVO’s mission, and these visits play a vital role in building awareness and understanding of the island’s volcanic environment among the younger generation. By creating opportunities for hands-on learning, MVO hopes to inspire curiosity and an appreciation of science in Montserrat’s youth.

The MVO team extends thanks to the programme coordinators who made these visits possible, and looks forward to welcoming more groups in the future
