Winners Announced for the MVO Creative Writing Competition 2024

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is excited to announce the winners of its 2024 Creative Writing Competition. With over 70 entries received, this year’s competition showcased incredible creativity and storytelling under the theme Guardian of the Volcano. Participants were challenged to explore their personal connection to the Soufrière Hills Volcano and reflect on how it continues to shape life on Montserrat.

The competition, which aimed to combine creative expression with science communication, provided a platform for voices across various age groups, from primary school students to adults. The entries offered a fascinating glimpse into how individuals perceive the volcano—its power, its presence, and its impact on everyday life.

For many young participants who have never experienced the volcano erupting, their stories reflected how its activity continues to influence their lives, shaping how they understand their environment and their community. The competition served as a reminder of the importance of creative writing in helping bridge the gap between science and the personal experiences of those living near an active volcano.

The Importance of Creative Writing in Science Communication

Speaking on the competition’s success, Thiffanie Williams, MVO Education and Outreach Coordinator, emphasized the importance of using creative writing as a tool for science communication. “This competition allows us to connect with the community in a meaningful way, hearing directly from individuals about their perceptions and experiences living near the Soufrière Hills Volcano. It also encourages the younger generation to engage with science and storytelling in a way that is personal and impactful.”

The MVO extends its heartfelt congratulations to all participants for their hard work and creativity and thanks the judges, teachers, and parents who supported this initiative.

The MVO Creative Writing Competition will return in 2025 with a new theme, continuing to encourage dialogue and understanding through the power of storytelling.
