MVO Launches 2024 Creative Writing Competition: “Guardian of the Volcano”

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is excited to announce the launch of its 2024 Creative Writing Competition. This annual event invites participants to explore their personal connections to the Soufrière Hills Volcano through the theme Guardian of the Volcano.

The competition encourages residents of Montserrat, including students, parents, teachers, and adults, to reflect on how living near the volcano has shaped their identity. Whether through stories of resilience, respect, or the awe-inspiring power of nature, participants are invited to share their unique experiences and perspectives.

Competition Details:

Theme: Guardian of the Volcano

Challenge: Write a short story about your connection to the Soufrière Hills Volcano. What does the volcano mean to you, and how has living near it shaped who you are?

Categories:

Grades 1 & 2 (50 words)

Grades 3 & 4 (100 words)

Grades 5 & 6 (200 words)

Forms 1, 2, & 3 (500 words)

Forms 4 & 5 (1000 words)

Adults (2000 words)

Cash Prizes will be awarded to the best entries in each category.

Deadline for submissions: Friday, November 8, 2024.

How to Submit: Entries should be labeled with the participant’s name and, if applicable, the class or school. Submissions can be sent to the participant’s class teacher or via email to mvomontserrat@gmail.com.

The MVO encourages the entire community to participate, whether you’re a student wanting to share your thoughts or an adult reflecting on years of living alongside the volcano. The competition offers a chance for the island’s residents to contribute to a collective narrative about the volcano’s impact and significance in daily life.

This initiative not only fosters creativity but also raises awareness about the ongoing relationship between the people of Montserrat and the Soufrière Hills Volcano. Through storytelling, participants can explore the past, present, and future of life on the island, while celebrating the resilience and strength of the community.
