Soufrière Hills Volcano: 29 Years On

July 18, 2024 marked 29 years since the onset of the Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV) eruption.

The eruption began on July 18, 1995, with a phreatic explosion and has since been characterized by activity in five distinct “Phases,” separated by periods of little to no activity termed “pauses.” The eruption is currently in its fifth (and longest) pause since the end of lava extrusion and a major dome collapse event on February 11, 2010.The SHV has significantly impacted the lives and landscape of Montserrat and continues to provide valuable insights into volcanology and associated hazards. While volcanic activity is low, the SHV remains active, making it essential for the MVO team to continue monitoring it.

Looking Ahead: SHV30 Scientific Conference

In 2025, the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), in collaboration with the UWI Seismic Research Centre, will commemorate 30 years since the Soufrière Hills Volcano began its eruption. To mark this significant milestone, the observatory is hosting SHV30, a scientific conference celebrating Montserrat’s pivotal role in advancing global understanding of volcanoes and their impact on societies.

Volcanologists scientists and enthusiasts from around the world will gather to discuss recent findings and share experiences from their work on this extensively studied volcano. This conference will be an opportunity to reflect on three decades of research, resilience, and the ongoing quest to mitigate volcanic hazards.
