MVO Director, Dr. Graham Ryan receives Lancaster University Outstanding Alumni Award.
The University’s Alumni Awards recognise Lancaster graduates who have made a substantial contribution in their field and have developed an outstanding national or international reputation amongst their peers.
Candidates for an Outstanding Alumni Award must have graduated as an Undergraduate or Postgraduate student at Lancaster University, or at an overseas campus or partner college (such as LU Ghana). Candidates must have a Lancaster University degree and must have made a substantial contribution in their field since graduating. They should also meet at least two of following criteria:
- have developed an outstanding international or national reputation among their peers
- be an inspirational role model for current students and potential future students
- have existing or potential links with Lancaster University
Dr. Ryan, received his award in a ceremony in the Great Hall at Lancaster University today (December 16th 2022). The recording is made available on the Lancaster University YouTube site https://www.youtube.com/lancasteruniversity (Ceremony 7) where you will be able to hear his speech.
The information published in the graduation brochure is as follows:
Graham Ryan is Director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, the first Montserratian to hold the post. A highly regarded volcanologist and geophysicist, he has worked at the British Geological Survey, the University of Auckland and the University of the West Indies.
Graham’s interest in the Soufriere Hills volcano is personal: the series of eruptions that afflicted Montserrat between 1995 and 2013 had a major impact on the life of all islanders, including his family.
Graham’s ground-breaking research includes the first three-dimensional model of the geothermal system that has developed on Montserrat since the eruptions, which has been a key step towards exploiting the island’s geothermal energy potential.
The MVO congratulates Dr. Ryan on this well-deserved achievement, recognising your dedication to the field.
