September 25, 2009: All are invited to join the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) in commemorating Earth Science Week 2009 (October 11-17) under the theme ΓÇÿLiving with Our Volcano.'

Earth Science Week is organized by the American Geological Institute since October 1998 to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth.

The activities organized by the MVO will commence with a special presentation to be delivered by MVO's Director Dr. Paul Cole on the ‘Lessons for Soufriere Hills Volcano from other long term eruptions worldwide' on October 12, 2009 at 19:00 hrs, Brades Art and Educational Center, Brades, Montserrat. Other activities include: interactive classroom sessions in all schools through the Island culminating with an ‘Open Evening' at the MVO on October 16 at 16:30 - 19:00 hrs.

The ΓÇÿOpen Evening' exercise is intended to allow all persons the opportunity to better understand the operations of the MVO, the scientific body responsible for providing advisory services to the various stakeholders as it pertains to the level of activities associated with the Soufriere Hills Volcano.

On October 16, students from each Primary, Secondary and Tertiary educational Institutions across the Island will be facilitated for one hour per school during the period 09:00 hrs - 16:30 hrs. This exclusive tour will allow the students to interact with scientists at the MVO and enjoy a practical demonstration of the different techniques used for monitoring the Soufriere Hills Volcano.

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory extends a warm welcome to its newly appointed Education and Outreach Officer, Ms. Lydia Indira Badal and Software Engineer, Mr. Rohan Simpson.
Prior to this appointment Ms. Badal served briefly as the Health Promotion Officer at Pan American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) in Guyana and has worked extensively in the area of communication as a radio and television Journalist for over ten years and also as a Communication Officer of the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), Guyana's premier agricultural research Institution. Ms. Badal graduated from the University of Guyana with a B.Sc. in International Relations and has a strong interest in poverty alleviation and climate change and its impact on socio economic environment.
Meanwhile, Mr. Rohan Simpson graduated from the University of the West Indies with a B.Sc. in Computer Science after which he joined the Mona Information Technology Services (MITS) as an Information Technology Analyst at the UWI Mona campus (Jamaica). During his tenure at MITS, Mr. Simpson was responsible for software design and development. Mr. Simpson is a member of various interest groups, including the Jamaica Environmental Trust, an organization that seeks to build environmental awareness among the people of Jamaica.
