Beginning around 17:00 (local time) on 8 August 2012, minor ash venting was observed and a roaring sound was heard from MVO which lasted for several hours. Clear, direct views of the ash venting were largely obscured due to heavy cloud cover. However, observations indicate that the source of the venting was the fumarole in the floor of the 11 February 2010 collapse scar that existed prior to the 23 March event. The ash venting was very weak and not as vigorous as on 23 March 2012. Ash was seen drifting west over Plymouth at 3-4000 feet (1000-1200 metres above sea level).

Fumarolic activity appeared more vigorous than normal.

Thermal images show no changes in the long-term “hotspots” and subsequent long-exposure photographs show no changes in incandescence.
