The volcano can be safely viewed both on the east of the island (Jack boy Hill) and west (Salem village, Garibaldi Hill).

The volcano poses a number of health risks some of which are more apparent than others. Pyroclastic flows as well as ballistics from explosions can severely injure or kill someone. On the other hand; long term exposure to volcanic gasses and ash, at increased levels is thought to cause breathing problems.

It does not ash all the time in Montserrat. Ash fall on Montserrat (safe zone) depends on two things, ash generation at the volcano and a favorable wind direction. The volcano produces ash less than 10% of the time. Also the wind normally takes the volcanic emissions towards Plymouth.

Visit the Safety section of this web site for information on what to do during an eruption.
