Sometimes the volcano has very long quiet periods in between eruptions – several months or even a year. Is the volcano still dangerous during these periods?

The volcano is still dangerous during these periods of apparent rest, depending on the size and condition of the lava dome. Some pyroclastic flows on Montserrat were triggered by heavy rainfall. Lahars (mudflows) can occur at any time during and after heavy rain.

Are their other volcanoes in the world that have had eruptions lasting as long as the volcanic eruption in Montserrat (i.e. more than 10 years)?

Some eruptions last much longer. Stromboli in Italy has been erupting for at least the last 2,400 years.

Is the volcano in Montserrat the biggest volcano in the Caribbean?

With a height of around 1,000 metres, the Soufrière Hills Volcano is not the biggest volcano in the Caribbean. The tallest volcano in the region is La Soufrière de la Guadeloupe, which is 1,467 metres tall. The largest volcano is probably Morne Diablotins, in northern Dominica. This is slightly shorter, at about 1,430 m, but covers a greater area than Soufrière Guadeloupe.
